Project management

Directed by the professor Wolfram Hinzen and coordinated by Elisa Peinado Valeriano. With the collaboration of Pompeu Fabra University, the FIDMAG Germanes Hospitalaries Research Foundation neuroimaging unit, Benito Menni Hospital, Barcelona, the Celisalud Pediatric Hospital, and the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid. This project is entirely funded by Fundación Querer.

Objectives and description

To investigate the language and cognition of children with severe language impairments, such as autism and other pathologies, as well as rare diseases like Coffin-Siris, Phelan-McDermid, Landau Kleffner, and others.

The construction of a thorough behavioral profile (Part 1) is combined with an MRI examination (structural and functional, Part 2).

Motivations:

Language difficulties can have an impact on overall cognitive performance, but the link between the two is currently unclear.

There are almost no neuroimaging studies of children who develop very little or no language, and the neurological bases of severe language impairments remain unknown.

Brain imaging data can help to explain the illnesses and provide biomarkers that can detect and track them.
